I go on about choosing your own driving style and building it, whether or not people around you like it or not (within reason!). You can develop it yourself from your own ideas and nick what other drivers are up to when you see something you like.
That way you get to develop something that’s your own, and go out and prove it’s the best, even if it isn’t! The motivation to make your mark is the point, that’s what I think drives us harder than anything else.
BUT
What if you can’t even begin…
What if you don’t really know what your style is, you are just driving around trying all kinds of things and never really establishing a base to work from.
With drivers who ask me to help I have one or two tricks to help get them started.
I can simply watch their driving, and from years of experience with drivers with a wide range of styles that can win, I can just say ‘I can see what your style is, it’s going to work if you focus on it.’
When that doesn’t work, I ask this question.
‘Who is your favourite F1 driver’
Then
‘why?’
I almost always get an answer to that question, and that can become the beginning of a discussion about driving style that can establish a starting point.
I asked that question to a driver in Spain this week, and he said Lando. So I’ll go through what I will prepare for this driver about Lando’s kart driving style.
Lando Norris Kart Driving Style Under the Microscope
I’m well pleased my driver Lewis prompted me to search for some recent Lando driving in a kart. I reckon after a bit of time out of a kart, your style gets even more established.
If you ever watch a driver get back into a kart after a while, the love for karting is more obvious and they tend to express their style more, because they really missed driving that way.
